Zero Balancing, ZB for short, is a gentle, powerful hands-on method of balancing the body's flow of energy with the body's physical structure. The treatment engages both structure and energy simultaneously allowing a more harmonious relationship between the two. The relationship between structure and energy may be challenged or disrupted due to an accident, repeated or chronic strain, emotional events in our personal history, daily stresses or even poor posture.
Zero Balancing was developed by Dr Fritz Smith, an osteopath, physician and acupuncturist in 1975. His belief and respect for both Western and Eastern approaches to healing led him to look for a way to integrate the two and he developed Zero Balancing, a way for both structure and energy to be engaged with a conscious touch. The actual name came about from a recipient who had just received a treatment, saying they felt back in balance and back to "zero".
Each session is done with the client fully clothed and usually lying on their back; there may be reasons when this is not the case, such as pregnancy where the client will lie on their side. The actual session will last between 20 to 40 minutes.
The technique uses finger pressure and held stretches focused on the bones and joints thus inviting the body to release any held tension. A point of stillness is created which gives the body an opportunity to relax, to let go of unease and pain and to experience a new level of integration and re-organisation within.
The session begins at the feet and then works up the body and spine to the head. The session finishes at the feet to provide a solid base for grounding.
Zero Balancing promotes a deep state of relaxation and most people feel refreshingly rested and revitalised after the first session. It is normally recommended that a person has three sessions initially. The decision to continue to receive ZB is discussed; some people have regular treatments while others have a treatment when they feel the need, i.e. during times of stress or transitional periods of life.
There are few contraindications for Zero Balancing; however, it is not suitable for someone who has had a knee replacement. Those who have had recent surgeries or bone fractures need to allow full structural healing prior to a ZB session. A full history is taken to ensure a Zero Balancing session is appropriate.
Pain usually occurs where our energy flow is blocked, restricted or weakened. As Zero Balancing helps to restore energy flow, it can help to remove the cause of pain and improve one's body awareness.
Being myself includes taking risks with myself, taking risks on new behaviour, trying new ways of 'being myself', so that I can see how it is I want to be.
